Rudy Childs is a photographer, documentarian and soon to be author. He’s written a book called Riff Raff and Rock And Roll [working title]. It is an absolute killer book, one that deserves to be published and turned into a movie. Rudy talks about the many concerts he saw from a long list of amazing bands, some at their genesis, like Van Halen, Cheap Trick, and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers just to name a few.
He shares amazing tales of hitchhiking across the US to see shows while encountering wild characters. His epic stories talks about parking lot fights, drinking, drugs and women have you wonder how the hell we'd get away with the same things today. It's a trippy time capsule, an homage to an America that was incredibly fun and not under the surveillance of all-encompassing cameras and cell phones. His dream of becoming a notable rock photographer is continually challenged as he spirals into the abyss of addiction. The outdoor parties are outrageous, as is getting into a screaming match with Sharon Osbourne, pissing off Joe Walsh in the middle of a concert, and witnessing AC/DC’s Bon Scott getting pissed off at concert security. When Rudy is left a bloodied mess as he's hauled out of an Ace Frehley show, he decides he's had enough, changes his life and becomes an award-winning documentary filmmaker. Trust me, you will love this interview. Rudy is a great guy, an amazing story teller and has photos, video and audiotape to back it all up.

Inside his new office space, Childs has a plaque from South Shore Technical High School in Hanover, Mass. It commemorates his work on the yearbook committee. Childs developed an interest in photography while doing photos and layout on the yearbook. After high school, he decided to put the hobby to good use. Childs took to taking photographs at rock concerts.Ted Nugent, AC/DC, Ozzy Ozbourne and The Outlaws were among the artists who were captured by Childs' camera lens."It was a lot of sneaking around because you weren't actually allowed to photograph a lot of bands," Childs said. "[After taking the photo,] you'd pass it off to your friend, who would hide it while you were getting frisked. It was exciting sort of stuff."Childs said he sold a few photos to Billboard and a few magazines overseas, but he didn't get rich off his rock 'n' roll venture."I would sell my pictures for $1 or $2," Childs said. "I had a steady job at Amtrak for 20 years. That was what I was really making a living off of."However, Childs said he is still reminded of his concert days from time to time."I was watching VH1 the other day and one of my photographs was on the Lynyrd Skynyrd [Behind the Scenes] special," Childs said.
The Dogmatics: A Dogumentary is a big deal for us Boston scenesters: You get the whole band story with plenty of music video samples along the way. The video of the band’s Thayer Street loft is priceless and absolutely crazy. Paul O’Halloran’s sudden death is dealt with taste and gives the film an emotional weight. It makes their later rebirth inspiring. This week we have an interview with the film maker Rudy Childs. Rudy has a long history with the band. As luck would have it he started doing documentaries for metal bands, but when the band started playing again he saw his chance to do a documentary on them.Rudy is a colorful character with many interests and accomplishments .. and a lot of crazy stories from his early days. The Dogmatics: a Dogumentary
Release: 2023
Trailer for The Dogmatics: A Dogumentary
The Dogmatics might very well be the most emblematic Boston band of this half-century, that too-few people know about. This outlier status has more to do with the untimely death of their bandmate than with their catalog of kick-ass garage rock. At its core, this is a story of brothers – by both blood and bond. Not only that, but a rock and roll quartet that included identical twins with a common passion for music and its rich history.
